Mitsubishi is ontstaan in 1870 toen Yatoro Iwasaki een transportbedrijf opzette. De naam Mitsubishi is ontstaan in 1873 toen het transportbedrijf veranderde in Mitsubishi. In de 20ste eeuw is Mistubishi opgesplitst in drie verschillende organisaties. Mitsubishi Bank, Mitsubishi Corporation en Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
In de jaren 70 was Mitisubshi vooral bekend in Nederland door hun auto’s . Maar Mitsubishi is daarna toch in Nederland bekender geworden door onder andere zich te richten op mobiele telefoons.
